resolv.conf

Today i had to shutdown the ESX management server to create a backup off it (disaster recovery and all). This machine is also an internal DNS server (Windows server 2003 btw).

On our ESX platform there are about 4 Linux (RHEL) machines active, and after i had shutdown the ESX manager/DNS, these machines were performing like a 286. Loading a page from Apache took about a minute or so. Apparently, the ESX manager was the first (of two) DNS server in resolv.conf and that’s why it behaved so strange. DNS resolving was horrible.
The quick “fix” was to put the orther DNS server first.

I didn’t had time to search for a reason why resolv.conf didn’t just skip the first DNS server. The options directice “timeout” in resolv.conf didn’t work, so if someone has a explaination/solution for this, i would like to hear it.

I guess Kris Buytaert is right, Everything IS a freaking DNS problem :-)

overdue : Asus eee701

This post should’ve been posted a few month ago, because that’s when i bought my Asus eee 701. I found it second hand for 150eur.

It was brand new (1 month) and used for a few times. The person i bought it from said the screen was to small and that’s why she sold it.
Back then, the 701 cost about 300eur (which i think is a little too much), so 150eur was (and still is) a good deal.

I used it a few times in the datacenter now (where it’s much more practical than a 15” laptop), and also on the couch to check some rss feeds and my email.

I really like this little machine…

AtanaStudio in Debian (lenny)

If you use AptanaStudio on Debian you might experience the following when creating a new css file.

JVM terminated. Exit code=127
/usr/bin/java
-Xmx384M
-Xms128M
-Djava.awt.headless=true
-jar /home/vincent/Desktop/aptana/./startup.jar
-os linux
-ws gtk
-arch x86
-launcher /home/vincent/Desktop/aptana/./AptanaStudio
-name Aptana
-showsplash 600
-exitdata 210032 Studio
-vm /usr/bin/java
-vmargs
-Xmx384M
-Xms128M
-Djava.awt.headless=true
-jar /home/vincent/Desktop/aptana/./startup.jar

To fix this, you must point your MOZILLA _ FIVE _ HOME to iceweasel. Aptana expects Firefox for this, but i don't have it in Debian.

Create a file with the following content, make it executable and place it in the Aptana directory.

#!/bin/sh
MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME=/usr/lib/iceweasel
./AptanaStudio

Now execute that file.
